What happens during a vessel condition survey?

Why condition surveys are requested

• Before or after charter.

Before attendance

The appointing party typically clarifies the vessel, location, timing, access arrangements and areas or issues to be inspected. Available records may also be identified before attendance.

During attendance

The surveyor may inspect relevant visible areas, records, systems or operational conditions depending on the instruction and access. Photographs and observations may be recorded as part of the field record.

What may be documented

• Visible physical condition within accessible areas.
• Areas requiring attention or further review.
• Relevant vessel information and documents made available.

After attendance

Findings are documented in a report according to the instruction. The report may support commercial decisions, claims review, handover discussions or operational planning.
